Chanukah calls to mind latkes, menorahs, and dreidels. It also calls to mind memories of family gatherings to exchange presents and Chanukah parties with a wonderfully joyous atmosphere. For me, I do not see any of these thoughts as mutually exclusive. Chanukah is deeply religiously based, centered on customs from our ancestors passed on from generation to generation. And Chanukah is also about joy and celebration, friends and family, life and gaiety.
Often, I will speak about the religious aspects and messages of Chanukah. Yet, this year I wish to underline the cultural aspects of Chanukah. We have had far too many months of separation and distance as well as sadness and grief. Chanukah is a time for gathering and joy. Chanukah is a time for celebration and connection. If we are honest, we can admit that as Jews, we do grief well. We do sadness well. This year, let us do gladness and joy well.
Over two millennia ago on this night, our Maccabee ancestors finished cleaning the temple and lit the oil. But it didn’t end there. They celebrated with happiness in their hearts and bliss in their souls. Let us make each night of Chanukah a moment in time when we can smile and feel the joy that is all around. We all have so much. We are so blessed. Let’s make Chanukah a time for happiness.
In the spirit of celebration, I invite all of you to join us for our communal Chanukah celebration this Friday evening at 7 PM, where we will hear our young people sing Chanukah songs and enjoy Chanukah treats outside. We will also light our special menorah outside, so all can gather, sharing the message of the lights of Chanukah with all who see. I hope that this year's Chanukah is time where you focus joy and happiness that is in your homes, because we all need some time for celebration.
Chag samei’ach,
Rabbi Robbie
