This time of year always brings out the best and most charitable parts of us. I have fond memories of volunteering at soup kitchens and supporting food pantries specifically during this season. I hope you too are called to perform acts of chesed (compassion) and Tikkun Olam.
As many of you know, there is great need locally and nationally. Many of you have had your eyes on what is going on in Kentucky in the aftermath of the storms. I hope that you will offer your support to the communities devastated there. While there are many ways to support them, the Reform Movement (the URJ) is calling on all congregations to help the Louisville Jewish Federation's project in supporting the local Red Cross. You can offer your support to those devastated in Kentucky by clicking here.
Locally, there is also great need. Recently, at a Yorktown/Somers Interfaith Council meeting, my colleagues at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown talked with us about the incredible uptick of need at their food pantry. This need is much greater than usual. Therefore, I am asking you to help our friends at First Presbyterian feed and support those in our local community. Below is a list of what is specifically needed. Please know that while you can purchase these items anytime, tomorrow (Friday) is the last day before Christmas, when clients will be picking up food from the pantry. You can drop items off in the bins in the back of the church located at 2880 Crompond Road in Yorktown.
Here is the list of needed goods: Cereal Oatmeal Pasta Canned Fruit Juice Dried Beans
The Torah commands that we lift up our brothers and sisters when they are in need. Now is the time for us to answer this call.
